SELLING AND LIQUIDITY

We Handle the Sale. You Enjoy the Return.

Direct Liv-Ex listing against live institutional bids. Private placements through our collector network. Most positions settle within two weeks.

HOW WE SELL

Three routes to the right buyer.

When you are ready to exit, Cellar Advisor handles the sale on your behalf. We access the global secondary market through Liv-ex and our network of fine wine merchants and private buyers across 30 countries. These are trade-level transactions, ensuring you receive competitive pricing rather than retail or consumer sale prices.

Liv-Ex Exchange

Listed against live institutional bids and executed at trade level. The fastest route for investment-grade Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Private Placement

Discreet sales through our network of UK and international collectors. Preferred for rare allocations and large single-owner cellars.

Auction Houses

Selected partnerships for exceptional bottles where reach genuinely adds value. We advise on timing and reserve pricing.

What's included.

Transparent pricing

Two per cent commission on the realised sale price. No listing fees, no minimum lot size, no other costs. The remaining 98% goes directly to you.

Verified provenance

Wines held at LCB Eton Park under our advisory have an unbroken, documented chain of custody from acquisition through to sale, which materially increases secondary market value and buyer confidence.

Written valuation

A written Liv-Ex valuation within 48 hours of receiving your inventory. No obligation to proceed. Just a clear, current view of what your cellar is worth.

Route selection

We advise on whether Liv-Ex, private placement, or auction is the right route for each holding, and manage the execution.

BEFORE YOU SELL

Key considerations.

Liquidity and time horizon

Liquidity is the most important consideration within the fine wine market.

While the secondary market for investment-grade wine is well established, it is not instantaneous. Unlike publicly traded assets, fine wine is traded through a network of exchanges, merchants and private collectors, meaning timeframes for sale can vary significantly.

In stable or strong market conditions, many wines can be sold within relatively short timeframes. However, during weaker or transitional market cycles:

  • Liquidity can reduce materially
  • Buyer demand may become more selective
  • Time to exit positions can extend beyond 12 months, particularly for older vintages, rare formats (large formats such as magnums, jeroboams or methuselahs), and highly specialised or niche wines

Clients should therefore approach fine wine with a medium to long-term investment horizon, and not rely on immediate liquidity.

Provenance and storage

Provenance is fundamental to value. Wines must be:

  • Stored in professional, bonded warehouses
  • Maintained under optimal conditions
  • Fully traceable in terms of ownership and storage history

Failure to meet these standards can materially impact both value and saleability.

No guaranteed returns

Fine wine should not be viewed as a guaranteed-return investment. While the asset class has historically delivered strong long-term results, outcomes are dependent on:

  • Market conditions
  • Holding period
  • Asset selection
  • Timing of exit

Clients should be comfortable with variable performance over shorter timeframes.

The role of Cellar Advisor

Cellar Advisor operates as an advisory and execution service. We provide:

  • Research and recommendations
  • Sourcing and acquisition support
  • Ongoing portfolio guidance

We do not guarantee performance or liquidity outcomes.

In summary

Fine wine offers a compelling combination of tangible asset ownership, scarcity-driven value and long-term growth potential. However, it requires patience, selectivity, and an understanding of market dynamics. Clients should ensure they are comfortable with these considerations before investing.
